13 Dead in Mumbai Ferry-Navy Boat Collision Near Elephanta Caves


A deadly maritime accident off the coast of Mumbai has claimed 13 lives and left two more critically injured. On Wednesday, officials confirmed that an incident occurred between the passenger ferry Neelkamal and a speedboat affiliated with the Navy near the famous tourist destination, Elephanta Caves.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage site found on an island situated on the Arabian Sea; besides, it is considered a major tourist attraction amongst tourists arriving in Mumbai. The accident happened on the way ferry to the caves.

Indian rescue teams, including the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and local police, mounted a massive operation. Video footage captures scenes of rescued passengers being brought aboard other vessels, many of whom were wearing life jackets. Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reported that 101 people were rescued.

Of the tot13 total casualties were civilians, and three were Navy personnel. The critically injured were admitted to a nearby spinal for treatment. Fadnavis promised the public that all families of the deceased would receive compensation of 500,000 rupees (around $5,890).

Preliminary observations show that this accident may have occurred because the engine of the navy boat had broken down. The authorities have launched a deep inquiry to detect the cause of this accident.

"We stand with the bereaved families at this hour of extreme trauma. Our thoughts and prayers are with them," Fadnavis said in his statement. The search and rescue operations are still underway. Officials will update further as the probe proceeds. The incident threw a dark shadow over one of the most celebrated landmarks in Mumbai that would call for stronger measures for safety in maritime travel.
