Harris Refers to Trump as a ‘Threat,’ Separates herself from Biden in Fox Interview
Democratic White House candidate Kamala Harris has sat her initial interview with Fox News, fiercely disagreeing over transgender prisoners and illegal movements along with President Biden's true capacity.
In the 25-minute, hostile back-and-forth between Baier and Harris — who spoke over each other with great frequency (and at one moment led Harris to say, “I am in mid-sentence of responding”) — on two separate occasions, the vice president turned directly toward Fox News’ camera when delivering a response.
Her move to tackle one of the most hostile networks -- where her core base, including younger voters, women and ethnic minorities, are deserting in numbers which make snap judgments scant work for poll-watching politicos who potentially might swap parties if she loses this election-- comes as opinion polls show that Trump is winning over more male support than other Republican candidates. Still, Clinton has a lead among young people.
Trump took over Fox on Wednesday — in a town hall format with an all-female audience as he tries to address his own political problems among women.
Challenged to apologise… Harris
Baier started the vice president's interview with an immigration question, playing a touching scene showing Jocelyn Nungaray, a mother whose 12-year-old daughter had been murdered by an illegal border-crossing migrant who was released from detention.
When asked if she owed an apology to American families killed by illegal aliens, Harris said, "I'm really sorry" for her loss.
“Those are sad stories,” she added. There's no doubt about it.
Baier also questioned her, saying that in 2019, we need to decriminalize border crossings. It is one of a number of matters on which the vice president has been accused by his critics of crediting and then discrediting proposals.
Harris responded with the following: “I do not believe in decriminalising border crossings, and I have not done that as vice president. Even if you’re asking about me as a president, who is the president now?
She also faulted Trump for convincing Republicans in Congress to vote out a border deal earlier this year, saying "He would rather run on an issue than solve an issue."
Gender surgery for prisoners
Harris was then inquired about whether taxpayers should pay for gender reassignment surgery, a question to which she had previously answered yes.
Asked whether she, as president, would fight for taxpayer money to be spent on it, her response was: "I will follow the law."
Pressed for more, she said that those surgeries were available to prisoners "during the time Trump was in office."
But during the Trump administration, there were no transgender surgeries in federal prisons.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons told Fox News Reality Check that since 2022 two federal inmates have had gender reassignment surgeries.
During a presidential run as a candidate in 2019, Harris said she would use her executive power to make sure transgender prisoners and immigrants in detention facilities have “access” to all care associated with gender transition, including surgery. A questionnaire read:
The Harris campaign said she “is not what she is proposing or running on” in 2024.
Harris scrambles to separate herself from the Biden tide
Harris was questioned on this point after Fox played a clip from an interview she gave last week in which the vice president said there is not "a thing" that she would change about the actions of the Biden-Harris administration. She went farther than Harris had before to try putting some daylight between herself and her boss.
She declared on Wednesday, “Let me be very clear, my presidency will not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency.”
Baier then turned to Harris and wondered if she believed that the American people would not "go back" after Trump and whether those who support a former president again are simply too stupid or uninformed.
Harris responded: "I would never say that about the American people.
Baier also pushed her on why she was running on a campaign promise to “turn the page” when she served as vice president for more than three years.
Now Harris started to lambast Trump.
Harris dodges Biden's mental State question
Baier asked Harris whether or not Biden was, in fact, of sound mind.
When asked exactly when she believed that Biden's mental faculties "may have been diminished", Harris responded: "Joe Biden... In those debates, I witnessed what he was able to do. He committed to a debate stage and made very serious decisions for this country."
Pressed on the matter, Harris said: "Joe Biden is not on the ticket and Donald Trump is.
